Building a ministry that lasts is possible, but it also requires intentionality. For many, it’s a journey of faith, commitment, and resilience. The Bible says in Philippians 1:6 that “being confident of this, he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
God isn’t haphazard, He completes Whatsoever He starts; that’s why He is called the Alpha and Omega. So when you think of Ministry and the challenges which comes with it, think of God and His Power to fulfil His word in your life and through you. As you embark on the journey of ministry, here are some key principles to help you build a ministry that lasts and remain obedient to God.
- Build on a Solid Foundation of Faith- Ministry doesn’t begin with a vision, rather it begins with your Faith in God through Christ Jesus and Faith in His Words to you.
Matthew 7:24-25 says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock… The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.” As a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, building a ministry on a solid foundation of faith in Jesus is the starting point for your ministry’s resilience through the storms. This foundation will stand the test of time and sustain your ministry amidst the undulating systems of the world around you. - Engage the Power of Love- Ministry’s rise and fall on the Revelation and practice of God’s Love. Apostle John, speaking in 1John 4:26 says, “we have known and believed the Love that God has for us. God is love and he that dwells in Love dwells in God….” Love failure proofs your ministry. Yes; I mean practically! 1 Corinth.13:8 says ‘Love Never Fails, why? Because Love is God; for God is LOVE! So, Believing the Love God Has for you as a Minister is key to the longevity of your ministry (especially in trying times), as your Love expressions to others keeps you anchored as well.
- Develop and Nurture a Culture of Prayer– Running a Ministry is Spiritual. You aren’t called to a life of corporate wins and grins, but to a life of Spiritual service in Honour of Christ Jesus as you render your spiritual services to humanity.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages us to “Pray Continually.” Regardless of the size or denomination of your ministry, prayer should be the foundational pillar that underpins everything. A great minister of the gospel says it this way, “80 percent of failures in every Christian life or enterprise is a Prayer failure.” This means that consistency in prayer, both individual and corporate, will help your ministry to prosper and grow. It will also help you develop a sense of community and true fellowship among your congregants, as it will allow the move of God in your midst without restraint. - Develop Godly Character- Show me someone anointed without Godly Character, and I will show you a person who is trapped in self defeat! How? Because the anointing is not a substitute to Godly Character but an announcer of your special gifts. But how is this a problem? The anointing would draw people to you, but won’t keep them with you. This is because Character can be likened to the haze of a smoke, you cannot keep it hidden for long, it will permeate the atmosphere, thereby drawing people either closer to you or away from you. If the anointing pulls them, your character would determine if they stay or leave. 2Peter 1:5-8 unveils the character traits of a successful minister: faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, & Love. It is noteworthy, that we are admonished to diligently increase with these things, in order to secure our fruitfulness as Ministers of The Lord.
- Practice Prompt and Unwavering Obedience to God’s Word-
As believers, our primary objective is to live in obedience to God’s Word. In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands.” As a minister, when you model consistent obedience to God’s Word, your congregation will follow suit. This attitude of obedience starts with a personal commitment to follow God’s Wisdom and leadership, even as you minister to others - Adopt a Servant-Leadership Mindset–
Jesus’ whole life was an expression of servant leadership. In Matthew 20:28, He says, “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” As a leader in ministry, strive to be a servant that leads by example. As you lead with humility, you’ll inspire those in your ministry to follow suit, help them become All which God has created them to be and to ultimately fulfill their destiny.
In conclusion, building a ministry that lasts involves enduring commitment and focus on the Word of God. It includes a culture of prayer, unwavering prompt obedience to God’s Word, and the adoption of a servant leadership mindset. Since Ministry is about honouring God and serving the needs of Others as God will instruct you, you want to ensure your character is well aligned with God’s purposes, to be a blessing to others. As you commit yourself to these principles, always have faith in God’s divine plan for your ministry. Remember, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
